Music

Guided by a full-time specialist in Primary music, the students are encouraged to experience the joy of performance and develop aesthetic awareness. Students learn to understand and interpret musical symbols through experiential activities in duration, melody, form, and expressive qualities.

Students participate in a Primary Division musical performance at least two times per year. The music program also incorporates solo and small ensemble work, both vocal and instrumental.

Singing is a vital part of the program. Instrumental instruction follows the Orff-Schulwerk methodology and uses speech, body percussion, elementary percussion instruments and recorder. Throughout the year, the music program coordinates with each grade level to support the classroom thematic curriculum. Class trips to hear the Cleveland Orchestra and visits by guest musicians augment the program.

Music class meets three times every ten days for students in kindergarten through second grade. Third and fourth grade students have music class two times per week.
