Songs & Stories
Philosophy:
Children begin their journey toward literacy long before they learn to read. Opportunities to hear stories, see words in print, discover patterns of rhyme, make inferences through pictures and share one’s own stories all contribute to a child’s future success and attitude toward literacy. Research has shown that music can not only enhance but actually improve one’s understanding of other cognitive domains. Pairing songs with literature is a natural fit.
Goal:
To foster a love of literature and storytelling through a variety of mediums.
Content:
Songs and Stories takes place each Friday afternoon in the comfort of the Lake Library. The children who stay for the Extended Day program are treated to stories told through the written word, orally, or with quality videos and DVD’s. In addition, the children are encouraged to share their own stories. Vocal music, a form of storytelling itself, is incorporated to bring added meaning to the stories being shared. We have great fun singing both familiar and new songs.
Each month follows a theme. For example, in September we begin with classic fairy tales and nursery rhymes. October lends itself to stories of autumn and Halloween. In November, hibernation and Thanksgiving are the focus. December incorporates various holiday traditions and celebrations, etc.
